Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Jefferson police department:
Sunday, Feb. 28: At 12:06 am a deputy requested assistance from an officer after a reported break-in the 1800 block of Highway 30 west of Grand Junction. The officer checked Jefferson for the subject, but did not locate him. At 2:01 am a complainant reported the theft of her wallet from Wild Rose Casino. The casino provided footage of the event and the suspect’s vehicle information to the officer. The subject was later arrested in Glidden by a Carroll County sheriff’s deputy and transported back to Jefferson by a deputy. John Henry Hironymus, 64, of Fair Oaks, CA, was arrested for theft- fourth degree*. At 5:15 pm an officer was requested at Greene County Community Center for a reported assault between two males inside the facility. The officer is investigating. At 6:15 pm a complainant caught a stray dog in the 500 block of W. State St. The officer placed the dog in the animal holding facility.
Saturday, Feb. 27: At 1:15 am an officer noticed a possible leaking nitrogen tank at Power Lift. The officer advised a key holder for the business of his findings. At 2:43 pm an officer assisted the Jefferson fire department and Alliant Energy with a reported gas leak at Peony Chinese Restaurant. The area was temporarily closed and evacuated until the issue was corrected.

Thursday, Feb. 25: At 10:47 am an officer responded to Scranton to assist the sheriff’s office with a reported bank robbery. At 1:53 pm an officer responded to Oly’s Corner for a possible counterfeit $100 bill. The officer took the currency to a local bank for inspection by bank employees. It was deemed to be real currency. At 1:58 pm officers investigated a backing accident at Syngenta Seeds. Tony Dirksen of Ankeny was backing a 2016 Freightliner semi tractor-trailer owned by Border States Ind of North Dakota in the area of the loading docks. He backed into a parked 2016 Peterbilt semi owned by Betts Trucking of Jefferson. The Border States semi had damage estimated at $100. The Betts’ semi had damages estimated at $5,000. At 4:24 pm a Greene County teacher spoke to an officer about concerns for the safety of a student. The school and officer will work with DHS on the issues. At 7:20 pm staff at Ace Hardware reported a vehicle without registration plates that had been parked there for a few days. The officer is working to contact the owner to have the vehicle removed. At 8:08 pm staff at Dollar General requested an officer for a shoplifting event caught on camera. An investigation has begun.
Wednesday, Feb. 24: At 5:03 pm staff at Dollar General requested an officer at the store. An unknown customer had passed a counterfeit $100 bill at the business. The officer took control of the fake and is reviewing store camera footage to develop a suspect.
Tuesday, Feb. 23: At 10:10 am a Jefferson resident reported falling victim to a social media scam. The subject had met and conversed for a period of time with a subject on social media. Personal photos had been exchanged between the two parties. Now the other party is threatening to make the photos public if a large sum of money is not sent. This is not uncommon, as several reports like this surface yearly at the PD. Residents should always be careful when starting chats with unknown people on the web. At 10:30 am officers were assisted by deputies in the execution of a narcotics search warrant at 501 S. Chestnut St. Suspected black tar heroin, methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia were seized from the residence for lab testing. Charges are pending lab results. At 2:07 pm a complainant reported a burglary at a residence in the 600 block of S Wilson Ave. An estimated $200 in property had been removed from the residence. The officer is investigating. *****An officer has completed an investigation that began with a traffic stop on 12/26. A female driver provided the officer with a false identity and was cited for excessive speed. A female subject later contacted the PD after learning her driver’s license had been suspended for not paying the citation. Sher advised she had not received the citation and suspected her cousin had provided the officer her personal information during the traffic stop. The investigation led to requested arrest warrants for the driver and passenger present during the traffic stop. The requested warrants are for Cheyenne L. Johnson, 20, of Marshalltown for identity theft, forgery and driving while license barred, all aggravated misdemeanors, and providing false information to officer (simple misdemeanor)*. The passenger and vehicle owner, Makayla Mai Neave, 23, of Liscomb has warrants for fraudulent use of registration and permitting unauthorized person to drive, both simple misdemeanors*.
Monday, Feb. 22: At 7:24 pm Wild Rose security staff advised that a wanted male had entered the casino. The officer made contact with the subject and arrested Corey Allen Mutum, 26, of Carroll on an outstanding Jefferson PD warrant for theft- fourth degree (serious misdemeanor)*. The charge stemmed from a coat reported stolen from the casino on 2/08.
Sunday, Feb. 21: At 11:02 am a resident reported an elderly male had become stuck in the deep snow near N. Mulberry St and Central Ave. The officer arrived and learned the subject had driven off of the roadway and became stuck. The officer provided the subject a ride to his residence in the county. At 12:51 pm an officer was requested by deputies to check on a vehicle in the ditch on Highway 4 south of 265th St. The officer located the undamaged vehicle and gave two occupants a ride back to their residence in Jefferson. At 7:40 pm a complainant reported he has custody of his infant grandson. The child was with his mother at a residence in Jefferson and the complainant had not heard from his daughter in three days. He went to the residence and found no one at home. The officer gathered information on the child and entered him as a missing juvenile. The child was later located in a motel in Council Bluffs and they were on their way back to Jefferson. The child was fine.
Saturday, Feb. 20: At 6:04 pm a complainant reported losing a wallet in Jefferson. The officer took a description in case someone brings the wallet to the LEC. At 8: 08 pm an officer assisted the Jefferson fire department with a dumpster fire in the 300 block of W. Head St. No damage was reported, and the fire was quickly extinguished.

Thursday, Feb. 18: At 9:24 pm a caller advised of a stray dog in the 500 block of W. Russell St. The officer placed the dog in the animal holding facility.
Wednesday, Feb. 17: At 2 pm an officer assisted US Capitol Police with security at an event at Landus Coop that included Sen Chuck Grassley.
Tuesday, Feb. 16: At 8:55 am an officer assisted a parent whose child was locked in a bedroom. The doorknob had broken, and the child could not open the door. The officer was able to gain entry to the bedroom, without causing damage to the door. At 10:38 am a complainant reported he had received the Texas law enforcement scam phone call. The caller advised the complainant he had outstanding arrest warrants in Texas and attempted to gain personal information from him. Some information was given before the complainant realized it was a scam. The officer advised the complainant to notify his bank and watch his financial documents closely for unauthorized activity. At 12:10 pm an employee at Oly’s Corner requested an officer at for a female attempting to pass a counterfeit $100 bill. The officer spoke to the female and began an investigation. The business did not incur a loss. At 2:29 pm an officer investigated a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Elm St and W. Lincoln Way. Wilfredo Alvarez of Alta was northbound on Elm driving his 2016 Dodge Charger. He failed to stop at the posted stop sign and collided in the intersection if a 2009 Toyota Camry owned and driven by Patricia Ott of Jefferson. Alvarez was cited for fail to obey stop sign. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $4,000. Damage to Ott’s vehicle was estimated at $5,000. ***** Officers issued 22 snow parking violation citations during this reporting period.
Monday, Feb. 15: At 5:59 pm a resident reported catching a stray dog in the 400 block of N. Cedar St. The officer placed the animal in the animal holding facility.

Saturday, Feb. 13: At 10:40 am an officer investigated an accident at the intersection of N. Maple and W. Washington Sts. Stacy Schiltz of Jefferson was eastbound on Washington driving a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu owned by John Hemphill of Kansas. Schiltz did not yield to a northbound 2016 Chevrolet Suburban operated by Aaron Skalla and owned by Kay Skalla, both of Jefferson. Schiltz was cited for fail to yield to vehicle on right. Damage to the vehicle she was driving was estimated at $5,000. Damage to the Suburban was estimated at $2,000. At 7:28 pm an officer performed a traffic stop at the intersection of Highway 30 and N. Elm St with a vehicle without registration plates. The driver could not produce a registration or bill of sale for the vehicle. The officer determined the VIN on the dash had been tampered with and located an old registration from a previous owner. The vehicle had been reported stolen out of Polk County. Jessica Hallinan was cited for fail to provide proof of financial liability. The vehicle was impounded, and DSM PD was advised the stolen vehicle had been recovered. The officer is investigating the event.
Friday, Feb. 12: At 5:06 an officer investigated a two-vehicle accident at N. Vine and W. Clark Sts. Jan Carlos Rosado-Vargus of Jefferson was westbound on Clark St driving a 2017 Ford Escape, owned by Angeliz Rosado-Cardona, also of Jefferson. Blane Robinson of Jefferson was northbound on Vine St driving his 2012 Chevrolet Impala. The vehicles collided in the intersection. Robinson was cited for fail to yield to vehicle on right. Damage to each vehicle was estimated at $1,000. At 10:29 am officers were called to the middle school for a disrespectful student. At 12:08 pm an officer investigated a rear end collision in the 500 block of W. Lincoln Way. Sandra Ford of Jefferson stopped to yield to oncoming traffic before turning off Lincoln Way. As she waited, her 2010 Chevrolet Impala was struck in the rear by a 1998 Toyota Camry, owned and driven by Joshua Koopmann of Jefferson. Koopmann was cited for fail to stop in assured clear distance ahead. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $400. Damage to Ford’s vehicle was estimated at $1,500. At 4:35 pm officers investigated a three-car accident at the uncontrolled intersection of W. Washington and N. Maple Sts. Diane Bergemann of Jefferson was northbound on Maple St driving her 2019 Lexus NX300. Jacque Smith of Jefferson was eastbound on Washington St driving her 2015 GMC Terrain. Smith failed to yield to Bergemann and their vehicles collided in the intersection, pushing Bergemann’s vehicle into the path of a westbound 2015 Kia Optima, owned and operated by Alexander Miller of West Des Moines. Smith was cited for fail to yield to vehicle on right. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $5,000. Damage to Bergemann’s and Miller’s vehicles was estimated at $3,000. At 5:50 pm a complainant reported her juvenile grandson had not come home after school. His mobile phone was off, and she could not reach him. The officers began tracking the juvenile’s steps after school and learned he had been given a ride to Des Moines by a friend. DSM PD was notified of the missing juvenile and began in the search there. The grandmother called back later and advised the juvenile was located in DSM with his biological father. He was brought to DSM PD and eventually returned to Jefferson.
Thursday, Feb. 11: At 3:20 pm an officer responded to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of W. Washington and N. High Sts. Peyton Kinsey of Jefferson was southbound on High St driving a 2010 Dodge Avenger owned by Heather Kinsey, also of Jefferson. Katherine Pittman of Jefferson was eastbound on Washington driving here 2019 Ford Edge. Kinsey failed to yield and the vehicles collided in the uncontrolled intersection. Kinsey was cited for fail to yield to vehicle on right. Damage to the Avenger was estimated at $800. Damage to Pittman’s vehicle was estimated at $400. At 3:54 pm an officer investigated a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of E. Lincoln Way and Vine St. Emma Olson of Perry was northbound on Vine St driving her 2003 Chevrolet Malibu. Due to slick road conditions, she slid through the posted stop sign and Lincoln Way and struck a westbound 2010 Chevy 2500 owned and driven by Rodney Scheuermann of Scranton. Damage to Olson’s vehicle was estimated at $1,000. Damage to Scheuermann’s vehicle was estimated at $400. At 4:11 pm an officer investigated a two-car accident at the uncontrolled intersection of S. Pines and W. Harrison Sts. Jaclyn Cunningham of Jefferson was driving her 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee (direction of travel not provided). She was unable to stop due to slick road conditions and collided with a southbound 2011 Kia Sedona owned and operated by Angela Murphy of Jefferson. Damage to Cunningham’s vehicle was estimated at $500. Damage to Murphy’s vehicle was estimated at $700.
Wednesday, Feb. 10: At 10 am a complainant spoke to an officer about a traffic stop on 12/26 in which an officer issued a speeding citation to a female subject in Jefferson. The complainant advised the person who used her identity during the traffic stop was not her. Her driver’s license is now suspended due to the citation going unpaid. The officer reviewed camera footage from the traffic stop and believes the subject is not the complainant. The female subject in the video has been identified and charges are pending in the matter. At 3:24 pm staff at Wild Rose Casino advised a “self-banned” male was on the gaming floor. The officer issued Robert Fry, 57, of Fort Dodge a citation for trespass- simple misdemeanor*.
Tuesday, Feb. 9: At 10:21 am a complainant reported the theft of a pair of sunglasses from a residence in the 500 block of S. Maple St. He provided the officer with a suspect in the case. The officer is investigating. At 11:55 am an officer investigated a backing accident in the parking lot at A&W Family Restaurant. Lynda Cochran was backing her 2018 Ford Edge from a parking space and made contact with a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado that was parked in an adjacent space. The Silverado is owned by Zachary Danner of Grand Junction. Cochran was cited for fail to have proof of financial liability. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $2,000. At 5:21 pm an officer investigated an accident at N. Elm and W. Washington Sts. Kayla Sturm of Churdan was southbound on Elm driving a 2011 Hyundai Elantra owned by Sarah Obinna, also of Churdan. Phyliss Lynch of Jefferson was driving her 2019 Ford Escape. She left the posted stop sign on Washington and pulled out in front of Sturm. The vehicles collided in the intersection. Lynch was cited for fail to yield upon entering highway. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $8,000. Damage to Sturm’s vehicle was estimated at $10,000. At 6:19 pm an officer provided traffic control at an accident scene on Highway 4 south of 250th St. A deputy conducted the investigation. ***** An officer has requested an arrest warrant for Corey Mutum, 26, of Carroll for theft- fourth degree (serious misdemeanor)*. The request was made after the report of a coat stolen from Wild Rose Casino on 2/05.
Monday, Feb. 8: At 11:15 am staff at Greene County High School reported a student had been caught with vaping products during school. The officer is investigating. At 12:40 pm staff at Wild Rose Casino reported the theft of a patron’s coat. The officer is investigating. At 7:13 pm staff at H&R Block advised of exposed electrical wires on a light pole in the 200 block of N. Wilson Ave. It appears a cover had been removed, exposing the wires. City staff will be notified to arrange repairs on the pole.
Sunday, Feb. 7: At 10:43 am an officer was requested at a residence in the 500 block of S. West for a domestic assault. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Christopher Michael Andrew, 23, of Jefferson for domestic abuse assault (simple misdemeanor)*.
Saturday, Feb. 6: At 2:48 pm an officer assisted Jefferson fire and Greene County Ambulance with a barn fire at 500 S. Grimmell Rd. The barn was a total loss. Officers continued to assist with traffic control throughout the evening. At 4:02 pm a complainant reported a cover had been removed from a storm drain at Russell Park. The officer covered the hole and advised public works of the issue. At 4:23 pm an officer investigated a vehicle crash at the uncontrolled intersection of N. West and W. Washington Sts. Keisha Vargas of Jefferson was northbound on West St driving her 2015 Town & Country minivan. Kayla Willms of Coon Rapids was westbound on Washington St driving her 2012 Dodge Ram pickup truck. The vehicles collided in the intersection. Both drivers were checked for minor injuries by Greene County Ambulance personnel. Vargas was cited for failure to yield to vehicle on right. Damage to each vehicle was estimated at $8,000.
Friday, Feb. 5: At 5:27 am a complainant reported a dead deer in the roadway near S. Elm and W. Russell Sts. The officer removed the deer from the roadway. At 1:32 pm an officer investigated a rear-end collision on Highway 30 at the south entrance to Wild Rose Casino. Harold Cecil Hiers Jr of Scranton was eastbound driving his 2006 Ford Focus. Lynne Pritchard of Scranton was following him, driving her 2010 Chevrolet Impala. When Hiers attempted to turn into the casino property, Pritchard was unable to stop due to slick road conditions. The front of her vehicle struck the rear of Hiers’ vehicle. Due to the road conditions, the officer did not issue a citation. Damage to Hiers’ vehicle was estimated at $4,000. Damage to Pritchard’s vehicle was estimated at $1,500.
Thursday, Feb. 4: At 7:32 am Imagine the Possibilities Harrison House requested an officer for a toaster on fire. The officer arrived and found the toaster had been unplugged and was no longer burning. No damage was caused to the structure. At 9:27 am an officer assisted a motorist who was stuck in snow on W. Central Ave near N. Elm St. *****Officers issued eight citations for violation of the city snow parking ordinance.

Tuesday, Feb. 2: At 7:14 pm an officer investigated a car-deer accident at S. Elm St and Greenewood Road. Maryssa Pierson of Jefferson struck a deer with her 2010 Ford Fusion. The officer estimated the damage to the vehicle at $3,000. *****Julie Derry of Grand Junction was cited for fail to provide proof of financial liability- accident related. The citation was issued after the completion of the investigation of a two-vehicle accident at W. Clark and N. Vine Sts on 2/01.
Monday, Feb. 1: At 3:04 pm an officer investigated a two-vehicle property damage accident at W. Clark and N. Vine Sts. James Hager of Jefferson was northbound on Vine driving his 2014 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Julie Derry of Grand Junction was westbound on Clark St driving her 2015 Kia Optima. Derry struck Hager’s vehicle in the intersection. Derry advised when she saw the Hager vehicle, she attempted to brake, but hit the accelerator pedal by mistake. Damage to Derry’s vehicle was estimated at $6,000. Damage to Hager’s vehicle was estimated at $1,000. At 5:44 pm a complainant advised of criminal mischief to a vehicle parked in the 200 block of E. Park St. As the complainant was fueling the vehicle, fuel began to run out on the ground. A mechanic advised that someone had intentionally cut the fuel fill line from the gas cap to the tank. It appeared someone had attempted to cut the hose to steal gasoline. The event could have occurred anytime in the prior week.
